Day one in Quito

Since we woke so late we decided to have a mellow day walking to the park. We got lots of interesting looks since we are in a "locals only" neighborhood. We intended to go to the vivarium but found it closed on Mondays. So we took a peddle boat around the waterway, the boys found a long zip line, played on a gigantic playground and practiced their Spanish on a cotton candy vendor!

Then we taxied to La Mariscal, a touristy area with lots of restaurants, travel agencies and loud music. Here every third person looked like a Gringo. We made some plans for the rest of our trip and had dinner on a patio overlooking a loud city street and Momma had a margarita!

Finished the evening at a cacao place sharing a piece of dark chocolate cake drizzled with dulce de leche, made from organic, locally grown cacao.....yum! Then paid gringo tax on a cab back "home."

Tomorrow we'll spend the day in beautiful colonial old town Quito.
